Brisbane: coming back as a tourist??!! what's for children???!

A day of fun at the Power House

Think you coming to Brisbane for the first time...maybe to visit a friend or for holiday or for fun...and you have children with you.....what are you going to do???

Well, I can tell you that Brisbane is a great city for families. Here children and their parents can enjoy and visit one of the many city attractions!!!

Here a list for you:

The Queensland Museum  has plenty to entertain  children, especially during the school holiday where different program are set up for them. In the same building there is the Sciencentre which is part of the Museum and has lots of activities that children will love (admission fee).

You can get lost in the State Library !!!! It is so big and it has a free area for young children called The Corner and another area called The Parlour  which has old-fashioned games for older kids. Not far from the library you can't miss the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art  which offer regular programs aimed at children and young adults especially during the holiday.

And then why not have a walk around South Bank. You can easily have a look around, let your kids play and maybe have a ride on the Fairy Wheel.

That's what you can find walking around South Bank!!

If then you are tired to walk around stop by the public library in Brisbane Square, at the high end of the Queen Street Mall. Here there is an indoor play area for small children and plenty of books for you to read.

Talking about parks: there is the Roma Street Parklands and the City Botanic Gardens both with play grounds, picnic areas and plenty of interesting areas for children to explore (no admission fee)

There are many things you can do with children here...so just explore and have fun!!!

Brisbane: "La dolce vita e il dolce far niente!!"

"The sweet life and the sweet idleness" next the Spanish Step by Simona Albanese

In addition to the world most acclaimed artworks and monuments spread all over the city of Rome....Romans are famous for "La dolce vita e...il dolce far niente!!!"

Why not transfering our passion for "La dolce vita ...e il dolce far niente" in Brisbane? This week (26 May - 2 June 2011) Brisbane celebrates the Italian Week with many events around the city and the region.

Why not doing the same...Enjoy life to the most, take a break while having Italian conversation in the heart of the city or in New Farm. The offer is valid for a short time!!!

Make sure you lock in a series of classes before your next holiday!!!

Be quick!!
Get in touch!!

My passion for Rome and art

From the top of the Spanish Step

A particular of the Four River Fountain's By Gianlorenzo Bernini

Here is a small article I wrote a few years ago on Rome:

by Simona Albanese
October 2008

As a native of Rome, art historian and curator, I would like to tell you something about my city.

As the saying goes 'all roads lead to Rome', and in my opinion Rome is one of the places on earth necessary to visit at least once during your lifetime. Rome is a city for Romans, tourists and visitors, a place where everyone can stop, see and do something during their journey. Every visitor to the city will leave with something special etched in their memory.
romanruins.jpgRoman ruins

Rome is celebrated for its major attractions, such as the Coliseum, the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain, but Rome has so much more to offer. Books and tourist guides can provide you with specific information on the city and it's best known attractions but this is a city of subtleties and quiet discoveries as well.
romanfountain.jpgWater fountain in Trastevere

Being a historical city with well over 2,000 years of history Rome can't be revealed in just one visit. In order to understand what I want to convey, it is best to have a slow and lengthy stay in Rome. Romans like to be in company,to visit places and talk to people, they like to go to the places not everyone goes and so I think there are some places that should be visited or noticed while you are in Rome.

Rome is a great place to enjoy and to inhabit starting from one of the most picturesque and distinctive areas, such as Trastevere, for its old streets, colour, students, vagabonds and famous people - a place where everyone goes to meet friends or to go out and have fun.

spqr.jpgSPQR - symbol of the city of Rome

There is sufficient street-life and things to see in this neighbourhood without even stopping to visit such wonders as the Beata Ludovica Albertoni by Gianlorenzo Bernini in San Francesco a Ripa or the church of Santa Maria in Trastevere. This is one of the oldest churches of Rome, containing 13th-century mosaics by Pietro Cavallini on the Life of the Virgin Mary. The main square where the basilica and the fountain sit is a meeting place, one of the centres of Trastevere nightlife in both winter and summer. In Trastevere even the old streets full of graffiti are a form of art. So too is the iconic Fiat Cinquecento; the symbol of the city or a glimpse of old buildings with the flags between some more modern constructions.

At the top of Trastevere is the Janiculum - one of the best locations from which to see the city below - the domes, gardens and bell towers. From Janiculum is it also possible to hear the 12 o'clock cannon fire coming from the direction of the Tiber signalling the correct time.

Moving from Trastevere, crossing the Ponte Sisto bridge is Via Giulia, leading to Via del Gonfalone, with the Oratorium of Gonfalone - a special place where concerts are held. The Oratorium is thoroughly decorated inside with mannerist frescoes showing the cycle of Christ's Passion, restored at the end of last century for the year 2000 Jubilee.

And then there is another important place to visit in the centre of Rome, The Triumph of Divine Providence by Pietro da Cortona in the Palazzo Barberini, the second largest ceiling in size decorated in Rome after the Sistine Chapel Ceiling depicted by Michelangelo.

The places I have mentioned are just some of my favourite places that I visit every time I return to Rome. Naturally there are many other attractions and treasures, but I'd need a book to list them all.

If you want to have an Intro to Italian Art don't forget to join my course starting next Thursday February 17th at New Farm State School Community from 6.30pm.

You have still got time to enroll!!

A particular moment in Brisbane

Hi all,

I apologize for not having the time to do regular posting at the moment.

We have had few problems with the flood here in Brisbane, therefore I haven't done any posting or comments or reviews on exhibitions, art events or art seminars and Italian classes.

From next week, after I have moved in a new place I will get back in track and I will start my posting.

Have a lovely Sunday!!!

Going under water in Brisbane

The water is here now and in the next few hours will become very dangerous to go around especially in the area effected by the flood...even beautiful buildings will go under water like these one on Commercial Road where they have put sands bags in front of the shops.....

If you want to know more and see other photos on the flood have a look to my other blog:

GoMA: 21st Century. Art in the First Decade

To celebrate the first ten years of the 21st century GoMA and the Queensland Art Gallery have created a new exhibition which will extensively explore the contemporary collections and feature outstanding new commissions and a select group of loans from Australian and international lenders...

..so yesterday we have decided to go and investigate this new exhibition...

my children were really impressed, because they could go and experiment with their own hands the artworks and that is amazing!

It is the first time I see a bus decorated in this way and certainly it is a nice thing, because the driver loves his bus and wants to make his passengers happy!

Around Brisbane while waiting for Christmas

Christmas....not very far now! Less than twenty days and people seem more happy, like the driver of the 199 bus this morning on the route to town, who has decided to decorated his bus for the festivities...

Have a look to his bus....Alessia has done this photo ...good on you...

....even on the Queen Street Mall there are decorations, here only some photos while in town with my daughter last week-end...

Photos by Simona Albanese

...you can see that commercialism is still alive and there are people in and around the city streets: shops, restaurants and souvenirs shops are there...but....I still need to photograph the Christmas tree on George Square,  and add the photos I have done at the Myer windows ....but with all the rain off the last few days...it will be done soon...hoping for some sun!!

Buon Natale a tutti!!!
Merry Christmas to everyone!!
